Laos’ teen pop idol, Alexandra Bounxouei, returns to serenade our audience with her not-yet-released new songs, courtesy of her musician father, Mr. Bounthavisay Bounxouei, who made a copy of the songs and gave it to VOA. Among those presented to our audience is a remix of one of her late grandfather Mr. Bounthamaly’s classic, the Pakse Rose.
Although very busy with her study at the Lao-American College in Vientiane, Alexandra, during the past months, made time to participate in many national and international events.
Most remarkably were the performance for ASEAN leaders during the ASEAN Summit in Vientiane in November 2004 during which she sang a Japanese song, and the Lao New Year celebration at the Lao Embassy in Bangkok, in which she performed in front of the crown Princess of Thailand.

The Mega Concert to aid tsunami victims, organised by the Lao Journalists Association (LJA) on January 15, was poorly attended in numbers but still raised millions of kip from businesses and the public, and from a telephone hotline for donations.
Hundreds called up to support the victims because the concert was broadcast live throughout the country,” said LJA Vice President Somsanouk Mixay.
Over 100 local artists took to the ITECC stage to perform modern and traditional songs and dances to an audience of over 1,000.
“The Lao Government joins others in expressing condolences to the bereaved and has set up a taskforce committee to mobilise sympathy and support. Today the LJA, enjoying most commendablesupport and cooperation from many, is hosting this ‘concert of sympathy,’ the proceeds of which are destined to help the tsunami victims in a small way. This is the single purpose of this grand concert tonight,” said LJA President Bouabane Vorakhoun.
Pop stars such as Ting Phailavanh and Touey Chanphaxay (Valentine Music) and Overdance and Alouna (Indee Records) joined Alexandra and Noy Sengsouliya to perform. Valentine Music and Indee Records also thrilled the audience with a specially written song for the tsunami victims.
“I asked Ty Oudalay, who wrote Kor Thod (Sorry), to write a song called Khun Phalang Chai (encouragement for tsunami victims). It took three days to write and rehearse the song,” said Valentine Music President Phoutthachanh Paphassalang (Bee).

Pop singer Alexandra has denied rumours that she would accept more than 13 million kip to sing for a prominent Thai music label.
“I do not know where they got this information that I would work for the Grammy Entertainment company in Thailand. It is not true because I am still studying for my future so I cannot do that,” said the young pop star yesterday. “Another reason why this is untrue is because I am fully involved in activities to help Lao society.”
Grammy Entertainment had recently invited the singer to perform for three days at the Pattaya Music Festival 2004 but Alexandra denies that this was part of a contract deal.
“My friends told me this morning at college that I was wrong to decide to sign with the company. I said, ‘What’ I only went to perform for them,” she said.
“Grammy did ask me to work for them but I told them I could not because I am studying for the next two years so I have no time,” she explained.
Fans asked recently why Alexandra had to speak in Thai even though she was Lao. “I would like fans to understand that when we visit some countries and try to speak their language it means we respect their country and their culture. It is the same when foreigners come to Laos and try to speak Lao. I know some local fans saw me speaking Thai on the TV, but just a little, not much,” said the pop singer.
This past weekend, March 19 and 20, Alexandra Bounxouei - Laos’ most famous pop singer - was invited to participate in the Annual Pattaya Music Festival, her third overseas performance after her 2003 summer concert tour in the U.S and her participation in the J-ASEAN Pop Festival in Yokohama, Japan, in December.
In tribute to this talented Bulgarian-Laotian teen artist, we featured two songs from her latest DVD - “Say Fon(the Rain),” followed by “Haak Nee Dae Loka(This Love is for the World),” her version of “Treasure the World” the theme song of the J-ASEAN Pop Festival.
We wrapped up the program with Bryonny’s version of “Treasure the World,” which is sung in three languages - Thai, Japanese, and English. The 22-year-old singer, born to a Thai mother and an American father, represented Thailand in the J-ASEAN Pop Festival.

Sixteen year-old Alexandra, or Thidavanh Bounxouei, is a new phenomenon in the entertainment scene in Laos.
She introduced her debut album “Dream” to the people of Vientiane in a three-day concert on the 16th, 17th, and 18th of September 2002, organized by Lao Art Media, her recording company. Needless to report, the singer was warmly received.
Alexandra has artists’ blood in her veins. She is the daughter of Bounthavixay and Iordanka Bounxouei, both graduates of a music academy in Bulgaria; Alexandra herself plays a violin. She is also the grand-daughter of Mr. Bounthamaly Bounxouei, the reknown Lao songwriter who wrote many famous Lao classics, such as “The Rose of Pakse.”
Although part-Bulgarian, Alexandra sings beautifully and flawlessly in Lao, delivering her songs in a style befitting her age. VOA’s Lao Service recently featured Alexandra in its “Lao Music from Overseas.”
